Connect it to Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot Studio
Claude
Tally’s plug-in and the open-source server’s one-click extension run in Claude Desktop on the PC where TallyPrime runs, talking to its local port. For claude.ai, mobile or a whole team, add a remote server as a custom connector; on Team and Enterprise plans an Owner adds the URL. Those calls come from Anthropic’s cloud, not your office network, so the server needs a tunnel or outbound connector to Tally rather than an open port 9000, and a private server must allowlist Anthropic’s IP ranges.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT needs a public HTTPS endpoint or OpenAI’s Secure MCP Tunnel; the open-source project documents the tunnel for keeping its server on the Tally PC. Use developer mode (on Enterprise and Edu an admin must grant access). ChatGPT treats tools without a readOnlyHint as writes and asks for confirmation, so mark report tools read-only and keep posting tools separate.
Microsoft Copilot Studio
Copilot Studio runs in Microsoft’s cloud and supports only Streamable HTTP, so it needs the same remote server as claude.ai. Add it with the MCP onboarding wizard on the agent’s Tools page and use OAuth 2.0, so each person signs in with your company identity and the server maps them to the Tally companies and tools they may use. Power Platform data policies apply to MCP connections, so admins can govern the Tally server like other connectors.

Permissions, identity and audit
- Tally sees every request as coming from the connector, not from the person asking, so the MCP server decides who may use which company and tool, based on each user’s sign-in with your identity provider.
- Keep the TallyPrime port on the same machine as the connector or on a restricted network path, as Tally’s integration guide advises, and never publish port 9000 to the internet.
- Start read-only: hide write tools (BLOCK_WRITE=1 in the open-source server), then add posting tools one at a time, each needing an accountant’s approval.
- Keep TallyPrime’s own controls on: Security Levels for user rights, a cut-off date for back-dated vouchers after each audit, and the Edit Log release where the MCA audit trail rule applies, so every AI-created entry is logged with its changes.
- Leave bank account details, PAN and payroll data out of tool results unless a specific role needs them.
- Log each call with the user, company, tool, voucher numbers touched and approver, but not the full report output.
Hosting and network
- Local: Tally’s plug-in or the open-source server runs beside TallyPrime with Claude Desktop, so no port leaves the PC. TallyPrime must be open with the company loaded, and tool results still go to the AI provider as part of the chat.
- Remote: the MCP server runs in your cloud account (AWS, Azure or similar) and reaches Tally over an outbound link from the office, such as an SSH reverse tunnel (the open-source project’s method) or a secure WebSocket connector (Tally’s reference pattern).
- Reports run inside TallyPrime itself, so cache large ones such as trial balance and stock summary. For many concurrent users, TallyPrime Server gives Gold setups server-based, concurrent access to Tally data.
- TallyPrime Cloud Access runs TallyPrime on a virtual computer hosted on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure; confirm with Tally or your partner whether a connector can run there before planning around it.
- Hosted sync services keep a copy of your books (The Usual Accountant uses an India-hosted, per-tenant encrypted store), so review data residency, retention and deletion terms.
Cost and timeline
- The open-source server is free under the MIT license; you still need TallyPrime Silver or Gold, an AI plan and, for remote use, a server you run. Tally’s public pages don’t state pricing for its MCP plug-in, and hosted services set their own (CData offers a free trial).
- A focused read-only TallyPrime MCP server typically takes two to four weeks including security and evaluation, covering the office-side connector and tests on a copy of your company data.
- Voucher posting with approvals, multi-company or multi-branch setups, and links to a CRM or online store take longer and are scoped after a short discovery.

Does Tally have an official MCP server?
Partly. As of September 2026 Tally Solutions documents a TallyPrime MCP plug-in for Claude Desktop on help pages published September 18, 2026, which require a TallyHelp login. There is no Tally Solutions entry in the official MCP Registry, and Tally’s public summary describes retrieving and analyzing data rather than posting.
Is there a free, open-source Tally MCP server?
Yes. The most-starred is dhananjay1405/tally-mcp-server (MIT license, 81 GitHub stars on September 27, 2026), with read-only tools for reports, ledgers, stock and outstandings and a one-click Claude Desktop extension. Other TallyPrime servers on GitHub are newer and have few stars so far, and some “Tally MCP” results are for Tally.so, an unrelated form builder.
Can AI post vouchers in Tally?
Technically yes: Tally’s integration interface lets applications store data without using the Tally screens, and some newer open-source servers add voucher creation. Tally’s public MCP summary covers retrieving and analyzing data, and the most-starred open-source server has no voucher tool. If you add posting, send only accountant-approved drafts, check a unique reference first (Tally warns that replayed writes aren’t automatically idempotent), and refuse dates before the cut-off date. For purchase bills, Docs by Ira in TallyPrime 7.1 already drafts entries for review.
Does it work with Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot?
Claude Desktop works locally with Tally’s plug-in or the open-source extension on the Tally PC. Web and cloud clients (claude.ai, ChatGPT and Copilot Studio) need a remote MCP server that reaches Tally through a tunnel or outbound connector. Does Tally need to be online or on the cloud?
No, but for self-hosted servers TallyPrime must be running with the company loaded, because they read it live through its integration port. A remote AI client reaches that PC through an outbound tunnel or connector, so the office needs a stable internet connection rather than an open inbound port. Hosted sync services copy your books to their cloud so questions work while the PC is off, at the cost of freshness and a third-party copy of your data.
Is it safe for GST and audit trail compliance?
It can be, if Tally’s controls stay on and the server adds its own. Use the Edit Log release where the MCA audit trail rule applies, set a cut-off date for back-dated vouchers after each audit, and have the server refuse postings before that date. Keep e-invoice generation manual: an IRN can be cancelled only within 24 hours, and deleting the voucher later leaves the e-invoice in place.
Which Tally versions and editions work?
The open-source server lists TallyPrime Silver or Gold as prerequisites and warns against Educational mode, whose date limits give partial data. The Usual Accountant says it also supports Tally ERP 9. Tally’s own setup page includes a step to update TallyPrime, with details behind the TallyHelp login.
Hosted or custom?
Use the official plug-in or the open-source server for read-only questions in Claude Desktop, and a hosted service if a synced copy of your books is acceptable. Choose a custom server when you need claude.ai, ChatGPT or Copilot access without open ports, per-user company permissions, GST-aware checks or approved voucher posting.
